Meet Dr. Binder

Dr. Devin K. Binder grew up in Berkeley, California. He attended Harvard University, majoring in Biological Anthropology, and he was awarded the prestigious Hoopes Prize for his summa cum laude senior honors thesis “Serotonin and behavioral state.” Aspiring to pursue both neuroscience and clinical medicine, he enrolled in the M.D./Ph.D. program at Duke University, graduating in 1999 with combined M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. While at Duke, he decided on a career in clinical neurosurgery and research. Between 1999 and 2005, Dr. Binder completed a surgical internship and neurosurgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco, the top neurosurgery training program in California, where he continued to earn clinical and research awards.

Following residency, he won the prestigious William P. Van Wagenen international traveling fellowship from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons to go to Germany for a one-year epilepsy surgery fellowship at the University of Bonn. From 2006-2009, Dr. Binder served as director of the epilepsy and functional neurosurgery service at the University of California, Irvine. At UCI he was honored with several awards, including the Research Associates Dean’s junior physician-scientist award, the Gold Star award from the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and the medical student Excellence in Teaching award. In 2014, 2018, 2023, and 2024Dr Binder was awarded Physician of Excellence by his peers. Since January 2010, Dr. Binder has been in private practice in neurological surgery in Orange County and also accepted research and teaching positions at the University of California, Riverside, where he runs the NIH-funded Translational Neuroscience Laboratory and teaches in the UC Riverside School of Medicine.

Dr. Binder is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Epilepsy Society, and the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. His clinical expertise includes general neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation and functional neurosurgery, spine surgery, and brain tumor surgery. He is excited to offer MR-guided focused ultrasound for the treatment of patients with tremors. Beyond standard training in clinical neurosurgery, Dr. Binder’s research background and Ph.D. in neuroscience enable him to critically evaluate evidence-based approaches and develop and apply the latest technologies in an effort to enhance the treatment of his patients. Dr. Binder believes strongly in providing a customized approach to each patient, using the services of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Dr. Binder strives to provide the same quality of care to each patient that he would provide for his own family members. His greatest fulfillment derives from the delivery of state-of-the-art neurosurgical care to improve the quality of life of patients in need.
